It was over 2 years ago when a message appeared in my email from a friend of mine. It went a little something like this; I noticed that you are a burlesque performer and I’m the chair of a convention that will be held near Seattle, WA in Seatac in July 2012. Would you be interested/able to produce a show for our convention? A simple enough question that sparked a whirl wind journey.

But why a Doctor Who Burlesque show? Since I was asked to create a show for a science fiction and fantasy convention I wanted to take something that appealed to a wide variety of people in that genre that could easily translate into a show. As I was trying to come up with something, I was hanging out with my roommate who had the episode Gridlock playing on the TV. I sat down, I watched and asked some questions; which led to the discovery of a show that I’m still exploring (hey, it’s almost 50 years old and there’s a lot to read up on and watch). That one episode turned into a Doctor Who marathon, where I watched every episode since Christopher Eccleston--and yes, even some of the really old episodes--and all of Torchwood. I loved the series and knew that I wanted to do a show inspired by the crazy antics of one Time Lord, multiple companions and a whole universe as a playground.

So the preparation for a Doctor Who Burlesque show began and it started with a lot of performing, producing a couple of monthly shows and the creation of Midnight Menagerie Productions, LLC. It might be January, the show might be over six months away but the entire production staff has been working on the groundwork for this show as a team for several months already!

I’m excited for this adventure. I’m excited to start involving other elements into the development of the show. I’m excited to read act proposals and hear other people genuinely interested in this project and I’m excited for the things we are planning. Spoilers, you’ll have to wait and see. So to everyone who has also come to love the Doctor, just wait and keep checking back in as we continue working on "Behind The Blue Door: a Dr. Who Inspired Cabaret”!

With Hugs and Love,
Vixen Valentine

Call For Performers!

"Behind the Blue Door: A Dr. Who-inspired Cabaret" is seeking act submissions!

Updated!

Due to the recent Seattle winter storm that has left many without power, we are extending our act proposal deadline to Saturday, January 28th, at 11:59 PM PST for "Behind the Blue Door: A Dr. Who Cabaret".

Created by nerds for nerds, “Behind the Blue Door” is our sexy, silly take on the Whoniverse.  We’re looking for performers (solo or otherwise) who share our love of Dr. Who.  Do you carry a sonic screwdriver?  Sleep with a TARDIS nightlight?  Do you love the Doctor and yearn to show that love to the world through stripping, song, and/or dance?  We want to hear from YOU.  Our primary focus is burlesque, but we welcome proposals from all disciplines: song, dance, film, puppets, spoken word fanfic, pole dance… you get the picture.  Send us your ideas!

While “Behind the Blue Door” is a curated show, our creative process invites feedback and collaboration.  Give feedback, get feedback, and share your skills with the team!  Each performer is responsible for creating and costuming their acts.  To give the show a strong and cohesive presentation, there will be peer-based act workshops and optional rehearsals in addition to three mandatory rehearsals (act review, dress, and tech).  Workshop and rehearsal schedules will be set after show is cast.  We want all acts to be as bad-ass as we can make them while still respecting the busy schedules of our performers.  Because work without play is never a good idea, there's going to be a series of fun public events to promote the show and hang out with other Whovians as much as possible.  All cast members will be encouraged (but not required) to partake in as many of these activities as they like.

The details:

What:  “Behind the Blue Door: A Dr. Who-inspired Cabaret” produced by Vixen Valentine, Beatrice Belladonna, Lowa de Boom Boom and Violet DeVille.

When and where:  Two consecutive public shows in June (15th/16th OR 22nd/23rd) and a private event on July 5th,  all in the Seattle area.  There’s a possibility for another show in the Bay Area on November 3rd. Performers must be available for all three Seattle dates.  Bonus points if you're able to travel in November.

Who:  We welcome proposals from all disciplines, experience levels, body types and gender presentations.  Again, burlesque is our focus, but if it’s not yours, show us what you’ve got!  Some performance experience is expected, though we welcome newbies as well as seasoned professionals.  Due to venue requirements and “adult content” (read: nearly-naked sparkly people), all performers must be 18+.

Money?  Yes! This is a paid gig with a modest budget. Compensation will include a combination of cash and event comps.

Process:  Submissions are reviewed to choose performers for auditions. Cast will be set from those chosen to audition.

Act Proposal Submission: Due January 28th by 11:59 PM PST via email.

Please answer the following questions and send to bluedoorburlesque@gmail.com by Sunday, January 21st at 11:59 p.m.

  1. Can you commit?  No, really.  Can you commit?
  2. What’s your concept?  Include as much pertinent info as possible: storyline, props, costumes, performer names, etc.  If this is a current act, send a link to pictures and/or video if available.
  3. Do you have performance experience?  (Note: you’re welcome to attach a performance resume, but if a sentence or three can get the job done, take advantage!  Think Twitter, not Blogger.)
  4. Do you play well with others?
  5. Why YOU for this show?

Auditions are Sunday, February 19th from 11:00 - 4:00p.m. in downtown Seattle.  If you don’t submit a proposal by the deadline to the correct email (see above), you won’t be chosen to audition.  No audition=no show.  Submit your proposal!

Wait – auditions?  But this is an act proposal! The act doesn’t exist yet!

That’s just fine!  However, this is a live show, and seeing you perform will help with our final casting decisions.  If you already have a complete Dr. Who act, please bring it.  Otherwise, bring a different piece that’s as close to show-ready as possible.

Please post general questions in the comments below the notes, or email us at bluedoorburlesque@gmail.com.  We look forward your proposals!

Best,

Vixen Valentine

Beatrice Belladonna

Lowa de Boom Boom

Violet DeVille
